For Ray LaMontagne’s Supernova tour, I developed a visual experience inspired by the psychedelic liquid light shows of the 1960s and 1970s, integrating a custom multiscreen LED set.
Working with Upstaging and LMG Touring, we incorporated advanced LED screens and rear projection surfaces, creating a distinctive aesthetic. The centerpiece—a custom circular 8MM LED screen—added depth to the stage, allowing visuals to flow dynamically, marrying vintage artistry with modern technology to enrich the concert experience.
A few tinkling keyboard notes unfurled into “Gossip in the Grain” to begin Ray LaMontagne’s set. It was a gentle, soothing opening beautifully matched by a truly gorgeous stage backdrop. An Art Deco-inspired framework of a sun-like circle in the center with lines fanning outward was overlaid on top of a projection screen. As the band played, the screen burst into rose and violet-hued images of what looked like galaxies, star clusters transposed over mountains, fields, and water. Through the evening, the screen changed with every song; filling with bursting flowers, faceted gems, and linear patterns… a spot-on match for the new songs on the layered and dimensional “Supernova.” – Janet Noe Rhoads, KDHX
The New England-reared singer/songwriter performed in front of an enormous and impressively kaleidoscopic video backdrop that would have had 1960s-era Pink Floyd fans lighting up like fireflies. – Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune
Given the fragrant smoke wafting through parts of the tent, no doubt some audience members were having a particularly vivid video experience. — Sarah Rodman, Boston Globe
